Controls

Edit the compact links attached to each section. Changes appear in desktop rows and mobile menus.

Filter keeps matching stories (different types combine); Mute hides matches; Boost adds ranking points. Rules also work from the console.

{{ kind }}
{{ rule.type }} {{ rule.value }}
{{ ruleEdit ? 'Edit rule' : 'Add rule' }}

Matches {{ rulePreviewCount() }} loaded {{ rulePreviewCount() === 1 ? 'story' : 'stories' }}.

By Score Newest First
{{ sortByTime ? 'Showing articles in chronological order (newest first)' : 'Showing articles ranked by score' }}
{{ clickbaitWeight.toFixed(1) }}
Higher = clickbait headlines penalized more
{{ clusterBoost.toFixed(1) }}
Boost per story covering the event (e.g. 40 with 2.0 = +80 points)
{{ importanceMultiplier }}
Multiplier for AI importance score (0-9). E.g. score 5 x 20 = +100 pts
Current Gravity {{ gravity.toFixed(1) }}
Last visit: {{ formatTimeSinceVisit() }} {{ getVisitCategory() }}
Higher gravity = older news drops faster in rankings
Override auto-set gravity for this session
Auto-Gravity Presets
Fresh (visited < 5 min ago)
{{ gravityPresets.fresh.toFixed(1) }}
Recent (visited < 2 hrs ago)
{{ gravityPresets.recent.toFixed(1) }}
Stale (visited 2+ hrs ago)
{{ gravityPresets.stale.toFixed(1) }}
Gravity auto-adjusts on page load based on when you last visited. Fresh visits use high gravity (suppress old news you've seen), stale visits use low gravity (show more older news).
Reading state

Opening a link is recorded separately from marking it read. Saved stories and votes are unaffected.

Number of columns when viewing by category
Performance note: Safari and mobile devices should use Low Power Mode (enabled by default). Chrome on desktop can use High Power for live score updates.
Personalisation
Learn from your votes to boost similar stories
{{ (multiplier / 100).toFixed(1) }}
How much weight to give personalisation scores
Auto Boost
Extra boost based on votes ({{ currentAutoBoost }}/{{ autoBoostMax }})
+1 per vote, capped at {{ autoBoostMax }}. You've voted {{ interactionCount }} times.
Low Power Mode
Defer live score updates
Scores update on reload or when you change a model tier. The first warm-up also refreshes scores. Scores update live after each vote. May cause slowness on Safari/mobile.
{{ modelVoteCount }} distinct votes · {{ classifierStats.trained }}. At {{ modelWarmVotes }} votes, Model High moves below World and Model moves to about tenth place. Your model section positions and sizes are saved.
{{ classifierStats.storageError }}
Effective multiplier: {{ (effectiveMultiplier / 100).toFixed(2) }} ({{ (multiplier / 100).toFixed(1) }} + {{ currentAutoBoost / 100 }})
Example: match score 90 x {{ (effectiveMultiplier / 100).toFixed(2) }} = +{{ (90 * effectiveMultiplier / 100).toFixed(0) }} ELO

Choose a geographic edition to adjust regional news prominence.

{{ getEditionDescription(currentEdition) }}

What editions do:

  • * Adjust which regional section gets the main slot (42 items)
  • * Move other regional sections to smaller sizes or hide them
  • * Changes section priority so your region appears near the top

You can still manually adjust sections in the Sections tab after selecting an edition.

Typed requests use Chrome's on-device Prompt API. Voice input uses the browser's HTML5/Web Speech recognition API (Google's service in Chrome); audio may be sent for processing.
In the console (press `): SYN "one column, dark theme, UK edition". With KB mode on, press / to speak to Syntactria. Needs Chrome with the Prompt API — run SYN STATUS to check.

About

jkl.io is a customisable user-centric news aggregator in alpha release (expect some bugs and hiccups).

We are pursuing a user-supported model on Patreon to avoid "optimising for engagement".

We draw from diverse quality sources, public broadcasters, universities, think tanks, as well as the media and the web.

Our default algorithm favours serious news. We also have an optional completely local in-browser algorithm you can tune and inspect.

The interface is customisable: themes, fonts, columns, section order (drag and drop in the menu) and size. There are keyboard shortcuts and a command bar.

We don't do user tracking, analytics, user accounts, cookies, cookie popups, or server-based data storage or personalisation.

The defaults are based on and optimised for Canberra in Australia, but you can change them.
